Who’s Peace is it?

The Lumière brothers wanted cinema to make an early blood pact with reality after it was born. Then came Méliés, the father of cinema as a spectacle, who wanted to achieve something different through cinema. For a long time he seemed to had won that battle completely. However, one has to see a documentary like La isla to confirm that, fortunately, Méliés could not claim total victory. La Nación, Chile

Festival in Guatemala

Muestra de Cine Internacional Memoria, Verdad y Justicia

Uli Stelzner founded the International Film Festival Memory, Truth and Justice in Guatemala. The Festival is an important cinematographic event for the entire Central American region and one of the most important human rights festivals in Latin America. It introduces the innovative concept of presenting high quality films combined with the participation of the population through open debates from all sectors of society. The festival presents a social, human and artistic form of cinema that promotes awareness and critical thinking in a country marked by violence, exclusion, racism, injustice and intolerance. This festival has grown steadily since 2010 and has hosted in its 11 editions over 100,000 people.

Unlike the followers of Dziga Vertov, Uli Stelzner does not use fragments of reality that were taken directly with a high degree of spontaneity. His work presents a thoughtful form of cinema, meditatively prepared, strongly scrutinized and organized according to a drama reminiscent of Joris Ivens. But unlike the latter, who was described as a "militant artist", Stelzner is a serene activist of history, a polyphonic chronicler of reality. Catálogue Retrospective, Berlin 2011

Workshops

Andrej Tarkowski once: the passion of cinema is nothing more than the friction between the soul and the outside world. Why do I want to tell a story with pictures? What is my relationship with the world? What is my point of view, my gaze? How do I give structure and dramaturgy to my movie? To create different images and narratives from those used by traditional media requires a high degree of imagination and management of a set of skills and tools.

Uli Stelzner, a self-taught filmmaker, shares through his movies, workshops, meetings and seminars a wide range of experiences, knowledge, limits and wonders of the documentary film with those who are eager to learn from experience and wish to develop their own projects.
